The Rose With A Broken Neck.
In Lucy Easton's first live action short film, Lewis Watson delivers his best performance yet through a psychotic and disfunctional anti-hero. The upcoming actress Katie Speck makes her debut alongside him as the central female protagonist and their characters fast progressed relationship provides the hook for this original thriller. In the expositon there is an insight in to each character's separate life before they collide. Their relationship then progresses throughout the narrative before it turns out for the worse when the male character's real personality comes to light, with gruesome results. The film begins slow paced with a lot of walking scenes, maybe too much which could lose engagement with the audience but as soon as the male's psychotic persona appears the narrative changes becoming more tense and fast paced fitting within the thriller genre much more. The aspect enjoyed most by the audience is the creative use of camera. The idea of using a hand held camera with a point of view shot works well within the confines of the genre and utilises the best tracking effect fitting in to the most crucial scenes. Also the ending is a full conclusion making the narrative complete which is important within a short film of a short duration such as this one. The technology could have been more sophisticated but with limited budget and resources this may not have been possible. The Rose With A Broken Neck earned an average 56% on our Rotten Tomatoes rating scale.
